Our family is no stranger to this "mythical" creature, in fact, our first okapi sighting happened back in 2005:
That's a 3D-pop-up okapi you see there. After learning all about this unusual animal, including how to pronounce the name (it's oh-KAH-pee), you can imagine our excitement to have had a real-life okapi encounter in the spring of 2007:
No, we weren't in the Congo, just at the San Diego Zoo. Honestly, we were just excited that anyone else in the world had ever heard about this random animal we knew intimately from a second grade report. Brayden even secured his own rare footage: (uncut & unedited)
I forgot about the leap-frogging bunnies. In answer to your obvious question, I am unsure if those are the elusive leap-frogging, friend to the okapi, Congo bunnies. Maybe we should head to the Congo to find out. Or do the conga. Either way.

I remember when Brayden did that report. Very cool. I have to say I didn't really believe in them until now. Thank you for making me a believer.
Oh and I especially like the video at the end when Brayden is trying to figure out how to turn off the camera.
Also, I think your link to the footage in the wild is broken. Yes, the link is broken... it's NOT user error.
I can't believe I've been around long enough to remember that report, nor that Brayden ever looked any different (or younger) than he does today.
And that comeback just made this very long day a little bit easier.
Very cool :).
We love okapi's. Sachsen did her report on them last year. We found out about them on Zoo Tycoon (where all my kids get their animal ed.)and then saw them at the Denver Zoo. Way to go with the 3-D poster. You will have to teach me how to do that.
I just have to tell you that I was in Target the other day checking out the fake animals in the toy department and they had an okapi! Couldn't help but think of you. If you don't have one, you should check them out!
